ORIGIN + NOTES: Central + Southern China - Discovered in 1702 by James Cunningham and named after his brother Allan Cunningham (1791-1839), a botanical collector for the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, England. Reportedly in cultivation since 1804. China Fir is a cousin to the California Redwood and one of the tallest trees in China - 150'. Important timber tree in China for house-building and coffins as wood is resistant to insects and termites. Avoid planting in wildfire prone areas as dead, dry needles are highly flammable.
