Mahonias were first gathered in China by Robert Fortune, a plant collector sent by the East Indies Company. In 1848, Westerners were not allowed in China. Fortune shaved his head and put on a Chinese robe and went inland anyway. Anybody with eyes could see he was a Westerner, but he still collected many plants for the Royal Horticultural Society. (Info from Gerald Klingaman, University of Arkansas Extension Service)

a.k.a: Leatherleaf Hollygrape, Beale's Oregon-grape, Beale's Barberry, Berberis bealei
